Tadeusz Hawrot is sharing here is enormously important:
A professional in mental health whom I admire and follow, Tadeusz Hawrot, is THE REAL Mental Health Foundation ambassador. I didn’t know about this foundation, but through Tadeusz, I learnt about their key goals:
- Helping 10 million men with their mental health
- Moving $10 billion into mental‑wellness solutions through aligned investing.
Only in the UK, key statistics on men’s mental health:
- 1 in 8 men report experiencing symptoms of mental health problems, compared to 1 in 5 women.
- 35.2% of men think they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.
- A fifth of men (19.5%) have been diagnosed with a mental health condition, confirmed by professionals
- Three-quarters of registered suicide deaths in the UK in 2020 were men
- 191,000 men a year report stress, depression or anxiety caused or made worse by work
Why does this happen?
For the men who said they don’t talk to anyone about their mental health, their underlying reasons were:
– ‘I’ve learnt to deal with it’ (40%)
– ‘I don’t wish to be a burden to anyone’ (36%)
– ‘I’m too embarrassed’ (29%)
– ‘There’s negative stigma around this type of thing’ (20%)
– ‘I don’t want to admit I need support’ (17%)
– ‘I don’t want to appear weak’ (16%)
– ‘I have no-one to talk to’ (14%)
Why am I sharing this?
Because I think it is as important as advocating for equality.
If we cannot normalise mental health also for men, we won’t reach equality goals either.
It is a matter of social and cultural education.
It is a matter of health and the future.
And now, because I always learn something interesting from Tadeusz Hawrot, I am going to look for Joseph Campbell’s «The Power of Myth» 🙂
