We live in an increasingly digital world. We spend a large part of our day connected: working in front of a screen, interacting on social media, playing online, shopping on e-commerce platforms, or learning through virtual environments. But have we stopped to think about how all of this affects our minds, our emotions, and our relationships? This is where cyberpsychology can help us.

What is cyberpsychology?

Cyberpsychology is a relatively new branch of psychology that studies how digital technologies influence human behavior, emotions, cognitive processes, and interpersonal relationships. It is not just about analyzing the use of social media or video games, but about deeply understanding how the digital environment transforms the way we think, feel, and act.

What areas does a cyberpsychologist work in?

Cyberpsychology professionals work across a variety of contexts and challenges. Some of the most common areas include:

1. Digital mental health

We explore how excessive (or improper) internet use may be linked to anxiety, depression, digital addiction, or sleep disorders. We also work on promoting healthy technology use and setting appropriate boundaries.

2. Cyberbullying and digital violence

From social media bullying to digital gender-based violence or grooming, we help prevent, detect, and intervene in cases of aggression in virtual environments, especially among adolescents and young people.

3. Online identity and self-image

How does Instagram affect self-esteem? What impact do beauty filters on TikTok have on body image? We study how people build their identity on the internet and the consequences this has on their emotional well-being.

4. Digital relationships and communication

Romantic, family, and social relationships have also changed in the digital age. We analyze how dating apps, messaging communication, and parasocial relationships with influencers shape human interaction.

5. Psychology of video games and virtual environments

Many of our patients are gamers or spend time in virtual worlds such as the metaverse. We study both the positive and negative effects of video games, as well as how they can be used as therapeutic tools.

6. Online intervention and psychotherapy

We do not only analyze the impact of the digital world: we also work within it. Many psychologists today offer online therapy, and cyberpsychology is responsible for studying and improving these practices so that they are safe, effective, and ethical.

Why is cyberpsychology so necessary today?

Because technology is not going to disappear: it is increasingly integrated into our lives. Cyberpsychology does not aim to demonize the digital world, but to understand it in order to engage with it in a more conscious, healthy, and balanced way. From prevention to intervention, our work is to support individuals, families, institutions, and organizations in developing a healthier relationship with the digital world.
