Feeling sad, upset, or worried is simply part of being human, and these feelings fluctuate over weeks and months, and throughout our lives. Women know this well, as it’s linked to our hormonal cycle.
It’s completely normal to feel irritable, angry, anxious, or down, but during perimenopause and menopause, the normal thresholds and frequency of these emotions can change. For some women, the change can be significant, and these feelings can last a long time.
A question you’ve probably asked yourself is, “Am I feeling depressed/anxious/sensitive because of my hormones, or is this just me?”
We suggest asking yourself the following questions and also asking someone close to you for their opinion:
Do I feel down/worried/irritable more often than before?
Are my premenstrual mood swings worse than before?
Have these feelings become stronger?
Are my moods or feelings affecting my sleep, appetite, energy levels, motivation, or my social or work life?
Are my moods affecting those close to me more than usual?
Have these unwanted feelings lasted for more than two weeks?
If you find yourself answering any of these questions, it may be time to take action and seek help.
